VISION & PLANS FOR THE YEAR 2009 - 2010
Dear Friends,
I take up responsibilities of the President of IIT Delhi Alumni Association with great pride and humility. It is a matter of pride to me that the Executive Committee elected me to lead this august body of most successful individuals. It is a matter of great pride for me to lead the association which has a very high social and intellectual respect in the society. At the same time, I feel humbled to have been given a position which could very successfully be handled by any of the utmost able 33,000 odd alumni that constitute this body. I promise that during my term in office I will ensure that the moral, social and intellectual standards of the association are maintained and enhanced. I will also ensure that we give due respect to all alumni, and enlarge their participation in the affairs of our alumni association. I propose to manage and build this organisation on these two principles.
Challenges: Today, we live in the fast changing times. I believe IITDAA is going through times where on one hand we can see great opportunities with ‘India Shining’; on the other we have new challenges, which put pressure on our core values, the core strength of ‘Brand IIT’. These are the times when we have opportunities, and challenges, of ‘returning alumni’, the alumni who, with their hard work made it big for themselves in the foreign land, and helped us build ‘Brand IIT’. These are the times when the ‘stay backs’, the alumni who, for the love of their country and the near and dear ones, chose to make their living in the then tough India, have been bestowed upon with great professional opportunities. These are the times which throw up new opportunities, and also challenges, of the shrinking world, the ‘globalisation’. All of these are directional changes. Like every entity, we, the IITDAA, needs to take cognisance of these, and change for meaningful survival and growth.
Reach out to Alumni: In my belief the biggest challenge for IITDAA today is its missing out on its biggest opportunity. We are missing out on a major opportunity of our collective strength because of low involvement of large number of our members’ active participation in the affairs of our association. Whereas we had taken up some specific activities to enhance this participation in the past, like the encouragement of city chapters, distribution of e news letter etc. These had mixed results. I believe in the changing times of globalisation we can, and should, look at newer and more effective methods of reaching out to our members. I believe we need to have a much more focussed, cohesive and persistent programmes to achieve the goals of involving more alumni with the association. We need to have a ‘marketing approach’ to ‘sell organisation’ to its members. We need to make the activities of our association ‘attractive’ to a larger number of its members. During this one year I propose to take up the task of ‘Reach out ‘n’ Bring in’ all alumni, as our ‘Objective One’. We will look into the whole gamut of our activities in relation to this objective, and try to find out of the box solutions to persisting bottlenecks. Like:
Constitution Amendment: Our constitution is 22 years old. We need to relook at the constitution with open mind to assess its effectivity in meeting challenges vis-à-vis today’s opportunities. We need to look at it if it optimises the use of modern day tools of working. We shall look into whether it facilitates our need for globalisation. We will benchmark constitutions of other similar organisations to incorporate best practices. On directions of our chairman we have already started work on this, and I propose to bring it to conclusion in reasonable time.
Chapter Policy: We have a chapter policy in place which encourages formation of IITDAA chapters in various cities across
Global Reach: A large segment of our members have made foreign land as their home. At many places IITD alumni have constituted formal/ informal interactive groups. I propose to make comprehensive programme to reach out to our Global Alumni by, one, establishing regular formal interaction between already constituted groups; second, by encouraging formulation of these groups covering at least one city in every important country and every continent; third, by coordinating with ‘overlapping organisations’, organisations with charters overlapping with us, like PAN IIT.
Web Site: An interactive web site is a very important tool for communication with people located at different geographical locations. Unfortunately, this has not seen the light of day in spite of best efforts so far. I propose to take this with commercially cooperative perspective and get rolling the ‘best possible’ rather than to get ‘the best solution’.
News Letter: This is again a very important communication tool. I propose to look at this as well as a commercially cooperative perspective to ensure its regular publications.
Reach out to Alma Mater: The bond that binds us together, and reason of our successful professional life, is our alma mater IIT Delhi. As it seems IITD is going through challenging times. The institution is facing challenges of requirement of high growth while maintaining standards that are associated with ‘Brand IIT’. It is in the mutual interest of IITD and its alumni that it succeeds in this objective. I propose to give higher focus on building and enhancing the bond between IITD and IITDAA on dual objectives. One, to help IITD maintain ‘Brand IIT’ even through these challenging times. And, second, to strengthen the bond between IITD and its alumni to make use of synergies for mutual benefit. Herein I propose to catalyse the inflow of support to IITD by willing alumni, and, to take up joint seminar and workshops with relevant entities of IITD for promotion of mutual interests, like industry- academia interaction and programmes.
Reach out to Society: Today IITD alumni have established themselves as leaders in practically all disciplines of Indian society. We as a group are one of the most powerful entities in the country. We represent the best and most respected group of intellegencia. As one of the most respected and able group of individual, it is expected of us to contribute to the society for its well being. I propose to take up activities which will help us fulfil this responsibility of ours. I propose to help organise seminars on socially important issues, preferably related to technology. In order to optimise resources and to have a larger impact I propose to conduct these programmes jointly in collaboration with other organisations which may have similar interests.
Above are my thoughts that I had shared with the members of Executive Committee before my election to this post, and have their support for. We have a very energetic team of office bearers, who have committed their time to work for the association. We always have had full support of our Dean (AAIP) and Director IITD, who happens to be the chairman of IITDAA as well. Past Presidents of the association, who jointly posses wealth of knowledge on opportunities and challenges facing the association, are standing by us with strong support. I seek participation of each alumnus in achieving above objectives for the association. With support of all I am confident that we will build on IITDAA further from what we have inherited.
President (IITDAA)
PS: If you have any views on working of IITDAA, I will be too pleased to receive them. You may send them to me at office@iitdalumni.com . I do look forward to your active participation.

2. FAREWELL TO IIT
It was the time of the year when IIT Delhi had to say Good bye and to bid Fare Well to al its Undergraduate and Postgraduate students of 2009 batch.
Following the tradition, the Director held two farewell dinners for the 2009 graduating batch. The UG dinner was hosted on 12th May 2009 whereas the PG diner was on 15th May, 2009.
While bidding them farewell and offering guidance and good wishes, Prof. Prasad and the Deans emphasized that as alumni they remained very much a part of the Institute.
Mr. Ravi Kapoor, President of Alumni Association welcomed all the new alumni to the Association. To make them feel already at home and in sync with the events being organized by the Association. He outlined the facilities and opportunities available to the fresh pass outs and accentuated the need to stay in touch with the alma mater and the association.
The enthusiasm of the students to be a part of alumni association was best felt at the stall that was put up by the association office staff at the Director’s Lodge. The students came flocking and were encouraged to give their contact details at the counter. The broad grin on the faces of the students was a matter of great satisfaction and joy for the association and people associated with it.
